Provo Canyon Photo Locations
Utah County canyons offer beautiful scenery for photography!
If you want to 'wow' your wedding guests by sending them save-the-dates or engagement announcements that showcase you and your partner in the beautiful Utah mountains, then Buffalo Peak may be the location to have your photos captured. Just outside of Orem is a location that takes my breath away every time I get to venture up there, even though I have been numerous times. Buffalo Peak features mountain meadows that seem to float in the sky above Utah County and under a beautiful mountain scape. In some areas, you can look down to see Utah Lake and/or Orem and Provo down below. From almost every angle, you can see gorgeous rocky mountains off in the distance. But beware! There is a reason that it is not more popular.
How to Get to Buffalo Peak
Kyhv Peak - Provo Canyon
As you travel up Provo Canyon, towards Heber City, you will see the Kyhv Peak exit off to your right-hand side. This road alone is quite steep and has very sharp corners. If you do not have an appropriate car to make it all the way to Buffalo Peak, then you may elect to stop in one of the designated areas and settle for a lower advantage, but still a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains. But if you decide to travel all the way to Buffalo Peak, be prepared for several miles of unkept, gravel roads that require a high clearance vehicle. Now, I came from Wyoming, where off-roading was a fun pastime, but even my father, who has come along to photo shoots up there, will attest that this road is not for the faint of heart. There are very deep ruts, sharp turns, and large rocks. Make sure to pre-plan where you'll be photographing with your photographer (hopefully that's me!) It is tricky to get to and it can be tricky to find, but once there, it is a gorgeous location that will be well worth the journey!
Being Prepared for Your Photo Session
What to know
- Leave early - As I stated above, the road is treacherous, and your GPS will suggest an unattainable speed. I always leave 20-30 minutes earlier than the GPS suggests so that I make it on time to my session.
- We might not have service. Make sure you are completely ready for your photos and know all of the details, because I may not be able to get your phone calls, texts, or emails once I have started up the road.
- Bring comfortable shoes - In some areas that we may want to photograph in, there is a steep, rocky embankment we have to climb up/down. Once we have reached the meadow, high heels will be fine!
- Make sure that everyone is capable of walking to and from the area. Although it is a short walk, it can be steep. If you are concerned about someone's mobility in your party, always ask and I will give you my opinion.

Summer - June (if it has been dry) - August
Fall - Early September
Winter - Only if it has been dry due to the roads
What does it look like?
Rolling Hills, Beautiful Meadows, Panoramic Mountain Views
You basically get everything beautiful that the Wasatch Mountains have to offer in one location. Although this location is most popular in the fall, it also has blooming wild flowers if we hit it at the right time. All year round, it is stunning. The positioning of the location amongst the mountains makes for even better golden hour photo sessions! There are wide open areas, shady tree groves, and rolling hills that offer compelling leading lines.
